Mist and drizzle greeted the early starters which soon cleared away with the ever-increasing westerly wind. By the afternoon conditions were very tough and was reflected in the scoring.
The early pace-setters in the Men’s Championship were the final three-ball of Sam Quail, Josh Ozard and defending Champion, Alex Guelpa who all carded two-over par 72s. Young Jacob Townsend was a stroke further adrift on 73.
As the wind increased so did the scores in the afternoon, but there were some impressive performances. Richard Clarke carded a74 (off 3 handicap), Jacob Townsend followed up his morning 73 with another excellent 73 as did Kealan Quigg. Jacob was leading in the clubhouse with a total of 146.
Attention was on the final group to see who could capitalise on their strong opening rounds. Bear in mind they were not to know the clubhouse score Jacob had posted. Josh made the turn with a two-over 38; Alex turned in 40 and Sam 39. With nine holes to go, there were still only two shots between them heading in to the tougher back nine.
Despite staring the back nine with a treble bogey 7, Alex managed the final 8 holes in level par for a 79 and a two-round total of 151. Josh added a back-nine 39 to his front-nine 38 for 5-over par 77. Sam Quail, fresh from his victory last week in the La Moye Trophy, played remarkably steady golf for a level par back nine (one bogey and one birdie) for a 3-over par 73 for a two-round total of 145 eventually pipping Jacob by a single stroke.
Congratulations to Sam, on his first Club Championship and second trophy in as many weeks!
In the Handicap event, Philip Grehan also showed excellent consistency with his two round nett total of 141 (70+71) off his 12 handicap.
The Ladies Championship is also played over 36-holes, but the first round qualifier was played last Tuesday. Leading after the first 18-holes was Anabelle Lucas-Villar who carded a 79. A shot behind her was Helen Gray and on 84 were Hannah Scriven and Suzy Cornic.
The Ladies played late morning yesterday, just as the wind started to pick up. Suzy and Hannah, unfortunately fell away with 85 and 88 respectively. Helen hung on to an 83, but Anabelle, defying the conditions, managed to card a 6-over 77 for a two round total of 156 to win her third Club Championship.
The Senior Men, playing a single round, attracted a healthy field and a new name found its way onto the trophy. Gary Denton, having become eligible for senior status this year, carded a 4-over par 74 to win his first Senior’s Championship. He was out in a one-over par 37, the only blemish was bogey 6 at the third. His 3-over par 37 on the back nine included a birdie 2 at the 16th hole. Runner-up with a 78 was Vic Bourgoise on a countback from Terry Smith.
A joint presentation for all the trophy winners was made by the Men’s and Ladies Captains, Mat Hague and Julie Frank after the completion of the day’s play. Pictured are the Men’s and Ladies winners with their respective trophies.
