On Monday 7th July we hosted our first event for six participants aged 14 to 18 with conditions such as Autism and Down Syndrome. Their names: Bohdi, Lewis, Reuben, Charlie, Afelabi and Henry. The success or failure of the day was down to them and they took their responsibility seriously, throwing themselves into the sandwiches, chips, J2O, Twirls and the golf. The sun shone on the day but not as brightly as their enthusiasm.
The tuition, following the Els for Autism “Game On” programme, was given by Cae Menai-Davis from The Golf Trust and three teams of two kids were overseen by Don Campbell, Tony Metcalfe and Andy Wilson. Murray and George were on hand in case there were any flagrant rule infringements.
We started on the putting green using soft balls and short putters before progressing to the real thing. Some nasty little five footers were holed and no one left the green with the yips. It's fair to say that Don and Tony picked up a tip or two. Following the putting we moved to the driving range hitting balls with irons and then “wooden” clubs. We finished the session by picking up all the balls (members take note!).
The event was a huge success and we’re now looking to organise another on a Monday or Tuesday in the second half of September.
We’d like to thank everyone mentioned above; Karen and Geraint (from READY); and those who offered to volunteer but weren’t needed this time. Thank you to the guardians who attended and again to the kids who made this a very special day for us all and reminded us why we raised the money in the first place. And finally, a big thank you to all the members who helped raise the money.
