Kieran Doherty sent ESN into the semi-finals of the Pyecombe Pitcher with a 15ft putt for par to halve the ESN pair’s match on the 18th green against former ESN club champion Ethan Randall and Ian Cooper.
Having gone out third, Kieran and debutant Jordan Divall shot an excellent 69 to match the Piltdown duo’s score in tough conditions on the bunkerless par 68 course.
With matches four and five not going ESN’s way at that point, the team’s hopes of making the semis rested on that putt alone.
Tom Foreman and Mark Campbell had led the team out earlier and a solid even par front 9 was eclipsed by some magnificent golf from Tom, the newly crowned ESN Scratch Matchplay Champion, on the return. Tom’s 3 Birdies in five holes effectively sealed the match and the ESN pair completed their round with a convincing 65 score and a four-shot victory which contained just one bogey and four birdies.
Though unable to match the birdie count of the group in front, Dean Plant and Max Evans took ESN into a 2-0 lead with a 72 to win by one shot over Luke Crampton and David Wills.
Kieran’s heroics followed and ESN were then certain to qualify with 2 ½ points and win the group by virtue of the bonus away point.
It was 'no party' in the group behind as in-form Rob Thompson and Ben Stokes fell victim to the tough conditions and the penalising heather around a superb Sussex golf course that presented a stern challenge. Piltdown Captain Derek Elphick and his partner Matt Parker were too strong for the ESN pair with a solid even par 68 and a 10 shot win.
Josh Hardy and Marcus Opoku didn’t have the 'story book' ending they wanted with a defeat against Piltdown’s top ranked player, + 2.1 hcp Rob Le Cras, and Alastair Ferguson. The ESN’s pair’s 74 was bettered by 3 shots.
The match was thus halved and each team earned 2 ½ points with ESN taking the aforementioned additional point.
The ESN team will now face Pyecombe GC in the Semi-Final at the Dyke GC at 1.30 on the 14th September.
Piltdown GC also qualified and will play Mannings Heath on the same day.
Support, as ever, will be welcome.
