While the score was a run-away win for Team GB by 301/2 to 31/2 it did nothing to diminish the sporting manner in which both teams played and lasting friendships that have been forged between the opposing teams.
The course was in excellent condition, the greens were still as fast as they have been recently, and with driving rain conditions on Friday and a windy Saturday it proved to be a very tough test for the visitors to score well.
The Dutch did get their own back with an evening of games on Saturday night and showed their skill at Sjoelbak (Dutch Shuffleboard) but we baffled them at the Club’s Sunday Carvery with Yorkshire pudding, a treat not known to them!
The GB team would like to thank Overmill for sponsoring the team shirts and to Stuart Low for making the vintage wooden golf club mementos presented to the Netherlands side by Team GB Captain Jim Robinson.
Thanks also all to the staff at Gorleston who helped to make the Dutch team feel at home and demonstrate what a great atmosphere we have around the club. They have been writing back to us saying what a wonderful time they all had.
Both teams are planning to maintain this annual contest with an away match in the Netherlands next year, I’m sure that after this year we can expect the same kind of hospitality over there so we are all looking forward to the visit.
