Wishaw Golf Club
Green Keepers Update - September 2025
Dear Members,

As we move into September, I'd like to reflect on what has been another eventful month and look ahead to the exciting competitions coming up.

1. August - A Month of Major Events
August had been another hectic month with the club championship, Bobby Gray Open and the Lithgow Mixed Foursomes. We also hosted the Lanarkshire Golf Association Senior Semi-finals. With the weather being a bit of a mixed bag, preparations were challenging, especially coming from a relatively dry spell to some pretty wet weather.

All greens were verti-cut again and also verti-drained to a depth of 175mm. Greens received their monthly application of liquid fertiliser. With the wet weather and pretty heavy growth, we had to blow rough and fairways to try to disperse the grass clippings. This took up a lot of time but we felt it was necessary, as when left it looked untidy.

You may have noticed a few different machines around the course - our fairway mower and rough mower are due for replacement so we demonstrated with some new ones to see how they performed over our course.

2. September - Looking Forward
Looking ahead to September, we have the Pro-am and the Lanarkshire Senior Final coming up as well as hosting the Tommy Gemmell Charity Day. We will still be in full cutting mode but hopefully as temperatures start to drop slightly, the growth will start to drop off.

All bunkers have been strimmed again and we have topped up a few with some extra sand to ensure they're in perfect condition for our upcoming events.

3. Exciting Equipment Trial
On the 14th of September we will have a demo of a VGR Topchanger. We are hoping to use this on the 14th and 17th greens. This will inject sand into the soil profile to help with drainage as these are the two wettest greens. This innovative approach should significantly improve playing conditions on these challenging surfaces.

4. Autumn Programme Planning
Our hollow tining is booked to start on Tuesday 7th October, marking the beginning of our autumn maintenance programme. This timing will allow us to complete essential aeration work while maintaining excellent playing surfaces through September.

5. Personal Note
Hopefully everyone is looking forward to the Pro-am and luckily for me, I get to play on the day, which I'm really looking forward to! It's always a pleasure to experience the course from a player's perspective after all the hard work we put into maintaining it.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of the season and again, if I can be of any assistance to you on course, please just ask.

Our goal remains making Wishaw Golf Club the finest course in Lanarkshire.

Best regards,

Gerry Bradley
Head Greenkeeper
