Shifting focus to the Wychwood bowl major, there was a slightly reduced field this time with only 64 players, as some had departed to compete in the Scottish pairs. Nevertheless, it was still a respectable turnout, though the overall scoring was not as high as in previous majors this season. Gary Cottiga claimed victory on countback, with Dave Buckley in second place and Dave Hurst taking third. Fourth place went to Leigh Roberts, and Jeremy Poole finished fifth. Notably, two players—Dan Thurston and Luke Brett—posted scores in the prizes but were ineligible for prizes as they did not meet the criteria for a major. A good year for you Cotts with some great scoring coming in and your persistence paid off big man.

The podium and prizes were as follows: Gary Cottiga – 1st, £75; Dave Buckley – 2nd, £55; Dave Hurst – 3rd, £45; Lee Roberts – 4th, £30; and Jeremy Poole – 5th, £15. Only three two’s were awarded this time, Alex Will, Ian Cross, and Martin Wainman.

Bringing us up to date, last Sunday’s competition was the September Stableford. There here was a stronger turnout, with 70 players taking to the field. Some of those teeing off later in the day got thoroughly drenched, as a storm swept across Wychwood Park, but a few hardy souls still managed to beat their handicaps. The overall winner was Ryan Beach, who took the title with 38 points after a card play-off on the last three holes. In Division 2, victory went to none other than our handicap secretary, Paul Price. Well played, gentlemen—excellent scoring in tough conditions. It seemed the early starters had to contend with the wind, while the later groups braved the downpour.

Last thing to mention is that the comp summer knockout finals day will be commencing from 8:00 AM, with the order of play yet to be decided. This will be followed by a nine hole competition, free of charge to other members, in the hope that everyone gathers around the claret jug to watch the finalists come up the 18th hole. We can all see who is victorious, and prizes will be awarded for the nine-hole comp as well.

Ryder cup board is up and is time to get your names down with this now scheduled for 4th & 5th October.

Cheers
Tom
