A little about my background: my passion for golf began at a young age when my Grandad first took me to Malton and Norton Golf Club at around five years old. I was instantly fascinated both by the game and by the machinery that keeps a course running. That interest never left me. I completed my work experience at Ganton Golf Club and was soon offered an apprenticeship. I went on to spend ten very enjoyable years there before being approached by Malton and Norton Golf Club to join their team. As a Norton resident and keen to gain experience on a parkland course, I welcomed the opportunity and spent seven fulfilling years with them, progressing to the role of Deputy Head Greenkeeper after two years. I then took the opportunity to be Head Greenkeeper at Selby Golf Club; I enjoyed my time there and gained some great experience. The highlight was preparing the course for the England Golf Women’s County Finals; the biggest event Selby has held.
When I saw the vacancy for Course Manager at Kirkbymoorside Golf Club, I knew I couldn’t miss the chance to apply, and I am very pleased to now be here.
Outside of work, I still enjoy playing golf, so you may see me out on the course after hours. My wife and I also love walking in the Lake District with our dog, and we are currently working our way through the Wainwright Fells. Another passion of mine is wildlife photography, and I spend much of my free time out with my camera.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has welcomed me so warmly so far. Jimmy and Ben have been fantastic, I have also been made to feel very welcome by everyone on the clubhouse side. My sincere thanks also go to Stuart the Greens Chairman, for his support since my appointment.
For those I have not yet had the chance to meet, please feel free to come over and say hello. I look forward to getting to know you all.
I will keep you updated on my plans to further improve the course through regular blogs and notifications about any upcoming works.
Best regards,
Sam Holtby
