Marshall Tied 7th After Strong Week in Greece
Andrew Marshall produced one of his most competitive performances of the Legends Tour season at the Costa Navarino Legends Tour Trophy in Greece, sharing the lead after two rounds before eventually finishing tied for seventh place on seven-under-par.
Playing the spectacular International Olympic Academy Golf Course, Marshall opened with a four-under-par 68 before adding a three-under-par 69 to reach seven-under and join a tightly packed group at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round.
What makes the performance particularly noteworthy is that Marshall's statistics after 36 holes were identical to those of eventual champion Simon Griffiths. Both players had recorded nine birdies and just two bogeys over the opening two rounds, underlining how closely matched they were entering Sunday's finale.
Marshall continued to attack the course in the final round, adding a further five birdies to take his tournament total to fourteen. Only Griffiths, who went on to claim the title at twelve-under-par, made more birdies during the week with fifteen.
For the tournament Marshall recorded:
• 14 birdies• 5 bogeys• 1 double bogey• Final score: 209 (-7)
The decisive moment came on the back nine of the final round. A double bogey at the 10th hole proved costly in an otherwise aggressive display that featured birdies at the 1st, 6th, 11th, 13th and 18th. Marshall signed for a level-par 72 and a share of seventh place.
While the final leaderboard showed a five-shot gap between Marshall and Griffiths, the statistics tell a different story. The winner made just one more birdie than Marshall throughout the tournament, with the difference ultimately coming from dropped shots. Griffiths completed the week with only three bogeys and no double bogeys, while Marshall's six dropped shots proved the deciding factor.
Nevertheless, the week in Greece provided further evidence that Marshall's game continues to stand up against the very best on the Legends Tour. To be level with the eventual champion after 36 holes and finish the week with fourteen birdies is an encouraging sign as the season moves into its next phase.
