The Miracle of Hinksey Heights
Jack Magee wins the Brimble trophy
There have been some memorable sporting moments: the Miracle at Medinah 2012, the 2005 Champions League Final, the 1981 Ashes at Headingley, Swindon Town winning the League Cup in 1969, and Nick Faldo’s final round of the 1996 Masters. In beautiful playing conditions and with the course presenting well, the whole field experienced Hinksey Heights own miracle. With odds of 1 in every 359 rounds for a 34 handicapper *, Jack Magee shot 9 under his handicap to win the Brimble Trophy. A fantastic round of golf that couldn’t have been predicted after the first 8 holes. Then came the game changing par surge from 8 through 12 that blew the other 22 competitors apart. Congratulations Jack, and it was a pleasure to be part of your group. Without realising it, this level of performance was absolutely required to win the event, with David Buckle shooting the equal lowest gross round of the day (a 79 matched by Ben Calnan) for a nett 69, and Alex Broz tearing up the form book to produce a nett 71 for third place using a budget LAB rip off putter (why pay more) and no sign of a driver in the bag. Well played to both and a particular mention for David’s good form which should hopefully take him into the 9-handicap range. Rob Barson and Jeremy Wood also shot to their handicaps on the day, more good performances. The next club event will be the Captain’s Charity Day on Sunday 28th June, so do get your teams of four signed up as soon as possible and indicate if you want to order food as part of your entry. *For the interested statisticians, the odds of the same for 13-21 handicappers are 1 in 3577 rounds, and 6-13 handicappers 1 in every 27,877 rounds
