Seniors Memorial Trophy Delivers Drama, Dash and a
Hardman wins - while Patterson aces!
The Seniors stepped up for one of the season’s big ones and they didn’t disappoint. The Seniors Memorial Trophy had everything — shifting weather, a course turned out to absolute perfection by the greens team, and a leaderboard tighter than a tap-in on the 18th. At the top of the pile it was Colin Hardman who held his nerve to take the honours with a superb nett 69. But this wasn’t just a one-off — this has been coming. Week in, week out, Col’s been there or thereabouts, grinding out scores, keeping things steady and giving himself chances. This win feels like the reward for a season of proper graft and consistency, and when it mattered most, he delivered. In fact that might be two of the three medals already this year! I'm sure the handicapper will catch up with him soon enough! Behind him, the chasing pack came hard. A cluster of players signed for 72, all pushing and applying pressure right to the last. Michael Donohue (Snr), Peter Connor and Kevin Patterson were right in the mix, but just couldn’t quite find that extra one to catch the leader. While the nett battle raged, there was serious quality on show in the gross stakes too, with Terry Stanners producing a classy 79 — a round full of control and shot-making in testing conditions. The course itself was a credit to the greens team. Despite the changing weather, it was presented in top-class shape. True greens, immaculate fairways and that proper “major day” look about the place. If you wanted to win this, you had to earn it. And then came the moment everyone will still be talking about next week… and probably the week after. Kevin Patterson didn’t just chip in with the odd highlight — he went and made an ace on the 2nd. One swing, straight in the hole. No messing about. In a Seniors major. It lit the place up. Playing partners buzzing, the word spreading quickly across the course, and by the time everyone got back in, it was already the story of the day. On a card where birdies were being picked off across the 2nd, 7th and 15th, Kev took it to another level entirely. That’s the kind of moment that defines a competition. And true to form, Kev’s doing it properly — there’ll be a bottle behind the bar next Monday so the lads can all have a nip and toast one of the shots of the season. Right through the field, it was a proper battle. Scores were tight, positions were hard-earned, and nobody had an easy ride. Changeable skies, championship conditions, a deserved winner who’s been knocking on the door all season — and an ace to top it all off. That’s a Seniors major done right.
