Surprise visit from 1964 Club Champion
Horgan brings a touch of history to MAGC
On Tuesday this week, we had a surprise visit from a former member and his family who are steeped in history at the club. Mick Horgan, now 86 was the Club Champion in 1964, yes 62 years ago! He and his family member John, the son of 1971 Club Captain - Dr. Trevor Morgan were down from London and Bath respectively, visiting Mick's sister Margaret in Mountain Ash and decided to call to the club to see how things were going. It's been 40 years since they were last at the club, they were shocked how much everything had changed from the clubhouse to the course. It was great to listen to the stories they had about times and members gone by. Mick Reminisced about his Club Championship win, where he defeated David Richards in the final. David was on a run, winning 3 Championships in a row before Mick stopped his streak. David went on to win another 5 Championships, a total of 8 in a 10 year period, dominating the 1960s and has only been surpassed by Ian Flower with 15. After a quick drink and a few putts on the 3rd they were on their way, but vowed it won't be another 40 years before they are back!
