On Thursday July 18th, 47 Senior golfers turned out to play at a brown Stover Golf course, in a heavily “Aussie-themed” event.
Conditions were firm and fast, and gave everyone a run for their money. Too much run for some, as drives and irons seemed to quickly hop off the fairway or skip through the greens.
Only 1/3 of all participants scored over 30 stableford points or better.
2 inflatable plastic ‘Skippies’ acted as tee markers on the first tee -
until they went Walkabout – led astray by Marcus Dawson.
Some players used their kangaroo logo-ed Senior Skipper’s Golf Ball. And of course they bounded, like roos, straight up the middle.
On the NTP 7th hole, Past Men’s Captain Steve Ross, thinned the ball off a path, through a bunker and onto the green where it came to rest within 3 feet of the pin. No one else got closer all day.
On the 17th - NTP in 2 hole - Dennis Chivers - who had an otherwise quiet day - bagged the prize with two good swings.
While the sun beat down and water and trees acted like golf ball magnets, a few resilient golfers kept their cool and scored.
Paul Smith collected/checked cards and identified the winners.
5th - Brian Lissaman. 34pts.
4th - Seniors fixtures secretary, Peter Waters. 35Pts
3rd - Rules supremo, Peter Dowling. 36pts
2nd - with 36 points - on count back - The Seniors Captain himself !!!
Overall winner, 2 points clear with 38 was Gregor Crum.
The team prize was won by a very lucky 4 - James Hancock, George Webster, Steve Harrison & Andrew Burrows.
Last - and least - was next years Club Captain, Grant Hawes.
Grant couldn’t even manage a stableford score in the 20’s.
Good luck next year mate.
Big thanks to everyone who played, and especially to Paul Smith, Chris Allison, Peter Waters and Andrew Neilan for their additional roles as Stover slope calculators, ball/card distributors, kangaroo wranglers, NTP collector, score checkers and totallers.
I said it was going to be a Bonza day. The Stover hospitality was top notch and the ‘roo-meat pie’ was Dinkum Fare. Fair Dinkum.
