Our East Devon Parker Trophy team overcame a strong Exeter side at Woodbury Park on 22 July under the dynamic leadership of Jason Wride, our Parker Trophy Captain, in the Inter-County Club Scratch Foursomes Knockout Tournament. The final score was a convincing 2½ - ½ victory for East Devon. However, the scoreline does not tell the full story, as two of the three matches went all the way to the 18th hole. Andy Procter and Duncan Taylor led from the front: They made a strong start and were 2 up after just two holes but Exeter fought back admirably and had levelled the match by the 5th hole. From there, the contest remained finely balanced until Procter and Taylor edged ahead during the closing stages, eventually securing a 3 & 2 victory on the 16th hole. James Pickard and Oli Smith consolidate: They were involved in what could only be described as a titanic battle against arguably Exeter's strongest pairing. Neither side was ever more than one hole ahead, and both teams recorded an impressive five birdies over the 18 holes. The match remained all square as they finished the 18th and they awaited the outcome of the final match before deciding whether a trip down the 19th was required Robin Murray and Tom Woodhouse deliver the winning point: Our third pairing were also involved in an incredibly close contest. As they stood on the 18th tee, their match was all square and the fading evening light added to the tension. The green was surrounded by players and spectators but with nerves of steel, they won the 18th hole to secure a 1 up victory, bringing the overall match to a successful conclusion for East Devon. Captain Wride commented: “The scoreline may suggest a comfortable win, but anyone who was there knows just how hard- fought it was. Every player contributed, and there were some outstanding performances throughout the evening. The support from East Devon members was superb and undoubtedly helped us over the line. Special mention must also go to Rob and Tom, whose carrot-fuelled night vision proved decisive when it mattered most!”
