Barton Cup 2026
The Competition Committee is pleased to announce a revised format for the 2026 Barton Cup, one of Portsalon Golf Club’s longest-standing and most prestigious competitions.
The objective of the revised format is to restore the Barton Cup as a true Matchplay Championship while creating an enjoyable and competitive golfing weekend for both members and visitors.
Competition Format
Sunday 2nd August Barton Cup Qualifier – McMenamin Plate
An Open 18 Hole Stroke Play competition (White Tees) will be held on Sunday. This is a standalone competition with a full prize fund. The overall winner will receive the McMenamin Plate.
The leading 32 qualifiers will progress to Monday’s Barton Cup Matchplay Championship. (Top 24 Nett & Best 8 Gross).
Players who only wish to compete on Sunday are welcome to do so. Should a qualifying player be unable to participate on Monday, their place will be offered to the next eligible qualifier.
Monday 3rd August - Barton Cup Matchplay Championship
The 32 qualifiers will compete in a knockout Matchplay Championship with all matches will be played over 9 holes. Entry Fees: Members: €10, Visitors: €50. The entry fee includes participation in Monday’s Matchplay Championship should you qualify. Timesheets open on BRS from 6.00pm Sunday 26th July.
The Committee hopes members will support the refreshed format and help make this year’s Barton Cup an enjoyable and memorable Bank Holiday event. We look forward to welcoming a strong field and wish all competitors the very best of luck.
Team News
Mixed results for Portsalon teams that remained in the hunt for silverware over the weekend.
Sean Barrett's side bowed out of the Barry Ramsey Donegal League after their trip to Ballybofey & Stranorlar on Saturday afternoon. They trailed 3-2 from the first leg at home and, despite a valiant effort at the Twin Towns clubs, they were knocked out.
Meanwhile Cathal Canning led his troops to Nairn & Portnoo on Saturday afternoon to continue their bid for a third straight victory in the Paddy Carr Donegal League.
Portsalon led 3.5 to 1.5 from the first leg but faced a hungry Portnoo side on their own patch in what turned out to be a wet and miserable afternoon for golf. Wins for Alistair Rodger & Donal Callaghan Jnr and Enda McElhinney & Jonathan Gallagher were enough to earn Portsalon the two points they needed to progress to the semi-finals where Letterkenny await in
