HASKELL 36 HOLE SCRATCH COMPETITION On Saturday 1st August Haskell pairing of Marie Norman and Jules Harbord went over to a very hot Halesworth Golf Course to play the inter-county 36 holes competition off scratch. This was a quarter final match against a great, experienced pair to progress into the semi- finals, the course was dry and bounces were proving unpredictable on the undulating fairways which made it tough against the girls on their home course knowing the lay of the land as such. Marie and I were down after the first 6 holes and started to pull back on the back nine getting it back to three, unfortunately we couldn’t keep this going and started the second 18 holes 6 down. The second round felt very much the same with us going further behind after 6 holes, again we started to pull back with some excellent golf being played and we had a little spring in our step, unfortunately we were running out of holes to pull back further and after the 28 hole the Halesworth girls won 9 up with 8 to play, congratulations to them, the match was played from the get go in the fabulous spirit our game should be played and we all enjoyed being part of this match! Marie and I would like to thank Gorleston Golf Club for the support, we are very proud of ourselves and to represent Gorleston Golf Club, we both said we would love to give it a go again next year. Jules Harbord EAST SUFFOLK JUNIOR LEAGUE After a resounding 5-1 victory in the home match which left Halesworth a little shell shocked a few weeks ago we headed off on Sunday for the return leg in what was going to possibly be a title decider. Unfortunately, due to a last-minute call off and being unable to find a 6th member for the team we had to forfeit a game, so we started 1-0 down without a ball being struck. Halesworth fielded all their ‘big guns’ for this one and first out was Luca having to give his opponent 2 shots on his own track the Halesworth lad playing off a 7 handicap went round in 1 under gross posting his best ever score and Luca’s 2 over gross was never going to be enough to get anywhere near finally losing 4&3 Convincing wins for Max Leuty (6up) and Marcus Bemment (5up) gave us hope of a possible draw or dare I say an unlikely victory, second match out was Ethan Bemment who had 3 birdies on the front 9 and was only 1up, the two lads carried on their epic battle coming down the 18th all square but an excellent birdie from Ethan’s opponent to win 1up put them 3-2 up in the match. Bringing up the rear was young Harry Page who got off to reasonable start but also found himself playing against a young lad who was also having a ‘worldie’ and raced into a 4up lead after 6 holes. Harry then slowly reduced the deficit to 1 down with one hole to play, victory impossible for the team but personal pride at stake. Yet another birdie on the Par 5 18th for the Halesworth lad left Harry 2 down at the end but he must feel very proud to have played and fought back so well. All in all, an excellent effort from all 5 of the Gorleston lads against a very strong Halesworth team. We have two more matches to play, Rookery away on August 16th and Rookery at Home August 23rd, two wins and if Bungay do us a favour and beat Halesworth at least once it is still possible to win this newly formed league. The future of Gorleston’s Tolly and Hambro teams looks to be in a very favourable light with these up-and-coming Juniors. Stuart Pearce Chairman of Competitions
