Club Results Captain claims Charlie Canning honours Club Captain Dr Enda Cullen got the perfect per-Captains Day boost over the August Bank Holiday weekend as he claimed the spoils in the Charlie Canning Memorial Trophy with a fine score 41 points, pipping Ollie O'Dowd by one to the top prize. Congrats to Enda on the win and good luck for the week ahead. The match was nip and tuck throughout, with both players producing some outstanding golf in front of a large crowd. Sean set the tone early with a superb long-range birdie putt on the 2nd before holing another huge putt across the green on the 15th. Sean earned his place in the final with impressive victories over Charlie Patton and Kieran O’Neill, while Gareth battled through hard-fought matches against Davitt Walsh and Alistair McMenamin. Gareth showed great resilience to keep the match alive on the 16th with a brilliant up-and-down after flirting with the hazard, but after two superb drives on the 17th, Sean calmly lagged his birdie putt close and tapped in for par to seal a deserved victory. A huge congratulations to Sean on becoming the 2026 Barton Cup Champion, and well done to Gareth on a tremendous performance. Jack Friel wins the McMenamin Plate The Barton Cup weekend was given a makeover this year and our competitions secretaries Ryan McGettigan and Shane Sandilands deserve commendation for making it a very successful two days of golf. The McMenamin Plate, donated to the club by the late Paid McMenamin, is played as the day one qualifier for 32 Barton Cup places, with the overall Sunday winner of the stroke play event claiming the McMenamin Plate, which was originally played for the first round losers in the Barton Cup. The re-imagined event created a field of 32 for Monday's Matchplay tournament but before that Jack Friel took the honours on Sunday with a superb 68 nett score, edging out John Joe McGowan. Joe Hensey's Donegal Seniors are in second leg semi-final action against Murvagh as they try to avenge defeat against the same opposition in last year's final. They got a match and a half from the first leg, leaving it all to play at home this weekend. Davitt Walsh takes his Donegal Junior Scratch Matchplay side to Ballybofey and Stranorlar for a first leg semi-final tussle, while at home Cathal Canning's Paddy Carr Donegal League squad continue their bid for three-in-a-row by facing Letterkenny in their semi-final first leg.
