Those skilled (and lucky) enough to win a Men’s singles event over the last 12 months are invited to play in the Champion of Champions Stableford event, contesting the final major and trophy of the year. In what were the windiest conditions that members are likely to ever experience in a comp, 18 members took to the course and braved the 30–40 mile winds that had been battering the country and had been predicted all week. The winds delivered in spectacular fashion, and unlike the professional lightweights playing the PGA Bermuda Championship, where the third round was cancelled, we played on.
Hinksey Heights is a windy course at the best of times, but players saw shots falling way short as the wind did not allow players to hit the ball their usual distances. When the conditions were at their worst around 11am, even trying to stand up and make a putt was a risky task, as players and balls were buffeted and bullied. Trolleys were blown over or away, balls blew off the tees and moved on greens while players attempted to putt. I, for one, was happy to get back to the clubhouse and out of the cold wind.
In what was a very close contest, two players tied for 1st place: Chris Thornett and Stephen Finn, both scoring a respectable 32 Stableford points. Chris won another trophy on countback with 21 points on the back nine, beating Stephen’s 16 points. An honourable mention for Jonathan Williams, who placed third with 29 Stableford points.
Well done to all who braved the elements, and thank you to everyone who has taken part in comps and club life in the last year, where it’s been great to see an increase in players entering competitions.
