Mandatory Winter Mats from 1st November 2026
Please note: This email supersedes the details mentioned on the recent club newsletter.
Dear Member,
From Sunday 1st November 2026, the use of winter mats will be compulsory on all fairways and areas of first cut (semi rough) on both the Hilton and Allander courses.
This measure is essential to protect our courses throughout the winter months. During this period, grass growth slows significantly and can stop altogether due to low temperatures. As a result, divots and damage caused by normal play cannot recover naturally until the growing season resumes in spring.
With wetter ground conditions and limited grass growth, continued play without mats can cause significant and lasting damage to our fairways, affecting the condition and quality of our courses for the following season.
Pitch Mark Repairs
We would also like to remind all members of the importance of repairing pitch marks on our greens. During the winter months, greens are particularly vulnerable to damage, and with little or no grass growth, unrepaired pitch marks can remain visible for several months.
We ask all members to take a few seconds to repair their own pitch marks and, where possible, repair any others they notice. This small effort makes a significant difference to the quality and condition of our putting surfaces.
Visiting Parties During Winter
The Management Committee has decided that visiting parties will not be permitted during the winter months.
This decision has been taken to reduce additional traffic on both courses at a time when ground conditions are particularly vulnerable and recovery from wear and tear is extremely limited.
Members will, however, still be permitted to bring guests to play during the winter months, subject to the normal Club booking arrangements and winter course protection requirements, including the compulsory use of mats.
We appreciate that visiting parties provide valuable income to the Club. However, the Management Committee believes that protecting the long-term condition and quality of our courses must take priority during the winter months.
Members' Cooperation
By using winter mats, repairing pitch marks and reducing unnecessary wear on the courses, we can minimise damage and give our greenkeeping team the best opportunity to present both courses in excellent condition for the start of the 2027 golfing season.
Please note that the use of winter mats is mandatory, not optional. Any member found failing to comply will be asked to leave the course.
We ask all members to support these measures and take personal responsibility for protecting our courses.
Thank you for your understanding, cooperation and continued support in maintaining the high standards we all expect at Hilton Park Golf Club.
